The automatic dating turned off for no discernible reason. They now all read Jan 1, 2000, although "today" and "yesterday" do appear. How can I turn it back on?

Does this only apply to files or to emails too e.g. in Apple Mail?Did you install any Apple Software Update, recovered files using Time Machine or something else prior to this issue?First make sure your computers date and time is set correctly within System Preferences. Try Repair Permissions:1. start Disk Utility (Applications > Utilities)2. click on the partition where Mac OS X is installed ("Macintosh HD" is default)3. click on Repair Permission4. when finished click Repair Permissions again (always a good idea to run it twice)Some of the permissions issues won't go away, even if you repair them a hundred times. These are caused by third party software and Apple not updating the permission databases.Try tripple resetting the PRAM:1. restart your Mac2. at the black boot screen press and hold "cmd + alt + P + R"3. keep holding it until you hear the "gong" for the third time4. release the keys and boot up normally
