Dyson is known for creating fantastic vacuums and over-engineering everyday products for the wealthiest one percent. But one side of Dyson is often overlooked: its incredible air purifying technology. For years, the company has been passionate about making sure people live in spaces free of dust, pet dander, and other pollutants to improve their overall health.

Now, Dyson has announced a new product within its new line of air purification products: The Dyson Zone headphones with active noise canceling and air-purifying technology. Here's everything you need to know about its new product.

Dyson Launches Zone Air-Purifying Headphones

Dyson has always created its products with lots of built-in, advanced technology, but this is its first product that targets tech enthusiasts and audiophiles. Its goal is to bring the public a pair of wireless, high-quality, closed-back headphones that have incredible noise cancellation but allow the user to breathe clean air simultaneously, whether they're indoors or outdoors. Since Dyson makes some of the best air purifiers on the market, we expect these to be impressive.

Dyson's Zone Headphone Features and How They Work

The Dyson Zone's two main features include noise cancellation and air purification. So, let's see how the company has delivered on these two aspects.

Active Noise Cancellation

The active noise cancellation brings you closer to the music and is perfect for commuters on public transit who simply want to drown out the world around them.

The microphones positioned on the outside of the headphones listen to the sounds around you; its algorithm then takes those noises and cancels them out by the time it reaches your ears. While designing the headphones, Dyson even created a realistic head and torso with human-like fleshy ears to make sure the headphone's seal was just right, which also helps cut out noise pollution.

While describing the headphone's features in a set of videos on the Dyson Zone product page, the company states that it "engineered a really large audio cavity with the best quality speaker driver available." Dyson wants to bring customers the best listening experience possible to hear what the musician intended.

The Dyson Zone will charge via USB Type-C, though the company has not yet disclosed the battery life of these headphones.

Air Purification

This is where Dyson has the most experience. Dyson says it has over 30 years of experience designing its air purifying technology, and the Dyson Zone has gone through over 500 prototypes to get the design right.

The company's goal here was to shrink down the carbon and HEPA filters found in its home purification systems and fit them inside the Zone headphones. Due to the prototypes having too large filters to work with the headphones, the company redesigned the filter technology.

The Zone uses electrostatic media that attracts dust particles and gaseous pollutants, similar to its carbon-HEPA combo filters. The user then breathes in cleaner air through the visor in front of the nose and mouth. Depending on how many pollutants it absorbs, the user will need to replace the filter after roughly one year. The visor is also removable for those who simply want to use the headphones as usual without the air-purification.

The Dyson Zone can also be linked to the Dyson Link app to view how well the filter is absorbing pollutants. If the user interface is similar to what's available in its home purifiers, you will also be able to see the estimated filter life.

The Dyson Zone headphones are scheduled for a fall 2022 release. There is no exact release date, and plans may change. As the potential release date gets closer, the company may share more details about the product rollout.

We have no information on the pricing either, but remember that the company's products are often pricey. To find out more, visit the Dyson Zone product page and sign up in the form at the bottom to be the first to hear about any updates.

Once Dyson starts sending out pre-released units to reviewers, we'll get an idea of where the Dyson Zone stands in the rapidly growing active noise canceling headphone market. We'll see how these stack up against other expensive headphones for audiophiles.

Dyson has a history of making extremely useful, technologically advanced products at a high price. And if this trend continues, these active noise-canceling headphones can be one of the best in the tech world, even if many people are unlikely to use the air-purifying visor.
