I have a HP Pavilion 2700 notebook with an external monitor hooked up to it. Now my laptop monitor only comes on once in a while and when it is not on the system doesn't recognize it at times. I have tried several times going in the display settings and resetting them but then when I turn off the computer it does not acknowledge the settings I set up. This is very frustrating. I was wondering if anyone has any ideas or has had this happen to them. I would love to get it resolved. I have Windows Vista on the laptop. Thanks for your help.

There may be a hardware or a software problem. To help identify which, I suggest you create another user account and try it for a little while. If the problem is resolved, then the issue is with your profile (user settings), and the best solution would be to transfer your data & settings to the new account. If not, it could be a hardware issue (loose contact?) or it may still be a software issue but with Vista itself, rather than with the profile.
