Since Disney+ launched in 2019 in the US, it has mostly skewed family-friendly, with a focus on shows and movies rated PG-13 and lower. Now, Disney seems more willing to position the service as being suitable for those seeking adult-orientated entertainment, with the introduction of three R-rated movies to the US catalog.

Disney+ Is Now Streaming R-Rated Marvel Movies

In March 2022, Disney+ added a handful of Marvel TV shows to the service that previously streamed on Netflix, including Daredevil, Jessica Jones, and The Punisher. These shows contain violent and mature themes, and marked a departure from Disney+'s focus on content suitable for youngsters.

Outside the US, these shows didn't represent such a shift. That's because of the Star brand on Disney+, an international solution to the US-based Hulu, which already featured more mature content from the likes of ABC, 20th Century Studios, and Searchlight Pictures.

On July 22, 2022, Disney+ further shredded its content restrictions by adding three R-rated superhero movies in the US: Deadpool, Deadpool 2, and Logan. In other territories, these movies were already available to stream. They were originally distributed by 20th Century Fox, but became part of the Disney family when the House of Mouse acquired the company in 2019.

The Deadpool movies, featuring Ryan Reynold's costumed mercenary, are full of violence, foul language, and sexual content. Logan marked Hugh Jackman's final outing as Wolverine and contains strong violence and language. While other superhero movies on Disney+ feature violence, it's muted in comparison.

How to Watch R-Rated Marvel Movies on Disney+

It's easy to watch Deadpool, Deadpool 2, and Logan on Disney+. Simply search for the titles like you would for anything else. Alternatively, go the Marvel brand page and you'll find them listed within the Marvel Legacy Movies category.

If you can't find them, or you don't want your children watching them, you need to adjust your content restriction settings. Disney+ has parental controls that let you control what each profile can view based on the content's age rating. We've covered this in our guide on how to access the full Disney+ catalog.

Disney+ Isn't Just for Families

If you've got young children, there's of course still plenty of shows and movies to keep them entertained—all those old Disney classics, Pixar animations, and the tamer Marvel movies aren't going anywhere. But Disney+ is slowly becoming a more lucrative proposition for those seeking adult-orientated thrills.
