On its 6th birthday, Discord announced that it will be rebranding its logo and switching up its UI. Although, most changes are quite subtle, Discord believes that it will make the platform feel more welcoming.

Discord's Logo Has Remained the Same Since its Launch, Until Now

Alongside color palette and design changes, Discord has decided to slightly tweak its logo.

In a post on the Discord Blog, the company explained why it decided to change the logo. The primary reason was that the current design was "deceivingly restrictive" which made creating interface elements, art assets, and merch items difficult. What made the logo restrictive was the fact that it was encased in a rectangular box.

Discord also revealed the logo's name to be Clyde and that is how it's referred to throughout the blog post.

Another small change comes in the form of rounded shoulders instead of the pointy antennas that Clyde had earlier.

Here is what Discord had to say about this change:

We realized that sharp little antennas didn’t translate well when printed on different types of materials, or when printed on really small surfaces such as a pin.

In addition to this, Clyde will now be more expressive. Discord stated that users "might even see Clyde smile, or be a bit sad, or sleepy." It is still unclear how Discord plans to implement this feature, and whether it's going to be on the initial loading screen or when the app is active.

Discord Has a New Wordmark and a Brighter UI

The Discord wordmark is not seen often when using the app but, nonetheless, the company decided it was time to change it.

For its new wordmark, Discord has gone with a custom font that will match the design of its new logo. The company also decided to go with a title case logo instead of all caps so that it is more legible.

Coming to the overall user interface, Discord has essentially made it brighter and more lively. The darker "Blurple" (blue plus purple) has been replaced with a lighter shade. All other colors in the Discord interface have been given a similar treatment.

Additionally, the color palette has been updated to include red.

Discord Worked With its Community to Decide on the Changes

Discord claims that they connected with over 26,000 community members for feedback about how they could better Discord and what it meant to them. Using these inputs, the company brought forward the host of UI changes.

Most of these changes have been done to make Discord more welcoming—for gamers and the general audience. While some gamers would prefer a darker theme, casual users are more receptive to a colorful UI.
