Discord is a fantastic way to engage in conversation with people who have similar interests. Be it a channel dedicated to gaming, anime, literature, or even something as formal as academics, Discord has tools and features to cater to all kinds of groups.

However, with a large community of people in a single server, spoiling a show, book, or game isn't ideal. Fortunately, Discord has a way to prevent people from seeing messages or images with spoilers. Read on to find out how you can add spoiler filters to text and images on Discord.

What Is a Spoiler?

For the uninitiated, a spoiler can be defined as an important piece of information about a TV show, movie, book, or game. This can be the revelation of a huge plot point, or something as minuscule as a cameo in your favorite movie franchise.

Oftentimes, works of fiction build the right amount of hype for something the audience will find amusing or surprising once it's revealed. For a first-time viewer, being spoiled may take the fun out of the show they are watching or the book they are reading. For a mystery movie, this could be finding out the ultimate plot twist or in the case of a video game, the character whose death was supposed to be a heart-wrenching surprise.

Reddit spoilers before and after being clicked on

You may already have come across people adding spoiler filters on Reddit, Twitter, or other popular social media platforms. Most responsible communities have a spoiler warning before discussing substantial plot points about a game, movie, or book.

Many popular messaging platforms and social media websites have a dedicated way to hide spoilers, and it falls onto the users to use this feature to avoid ruining the suspense or surprise for everyone else.

How to Add a Spoiler to Text on Discord

There are a couple of different ways you can add a spoiler tag to your messages on Discord. Depending on the context of the message, you can either censor the whole text or just a part of it.

Here are the ways you can filter out spoilers in your Discord text messages:

  • Using the /spoiler command is the quickest way to hide the entire message, including any images you attach.

  • Select part of a message and click on the eye icon to specifically hide the selected bit. This can be useful when you still want to get your point across without blabbering out the sensitive bits of information about something.

  • If you've accidentally sent a message without using the spoiler tag, you don't need to delete it. Assuming other people haven't already seen your text, you can simply right-click on your message, click on the edit icon, and enclose the text using "||" :
    || your sensitive message goes here ||
Using markdown to hide text on Discord

Hiding sensitive content on Discord for your phone is the same. You can use the /spoiler command, select specific bits of your text to censor them, or use Markdown to hide your messages using the vertical bars. Messages with spoilers can be revealed by clicking or tapping on them once and will remain visible till you switch servers or channels.

If you're feeling daring enough, you can disable the spoiler warning completely by navigating to Settings > Text and Images > Show Spoiler Content and setting it to Always.

How to Add a Spoiler Warning to Images on Discord

You can also send images with a spoiler warning on Discord and the process is quite straightforward. However, unlike text messages, there is no way to add a spoiler tag to an image that has already been sent.

To add a spoiler warning to an image on Discord on your desktop or the web:

  1. Use the plus icon next to the chat box and click on Upload a File.
  2. From the file explorer, choose the image you wish to send and click on Open.
  3. Before sending the image as usual, click on the eye icon to mark the image as a spoiler. You can also click the pencil icon to edit the image and set a spoiler tag.
