Most of us love listening to Spotify—everything from lo-fi beats while at work to the latest podcast episode on our commute home. If you're an avid Spotify user, you know how easy it can quickly consume mobile data.

The good news is that it's easy to disable mobile data usage while still being able to listen to the latest playlists and podcasts anywhere you go, even while offline.

Disable Spotify Mobile Data Usage From iOS Settings

First, you'll want to change iOS settings to disable Spotify's mobile data usage. So, once you have unlocked your phone, follow these simple steps on your iPhone to prevent Spotify from using mobile data:

  1. Head over to Settings on your iPhone.
  2. Scroll down and tap Spotify.
  3. By default, Cellular Data will be turned on. Tap the toggle to turn it off.

That's it. You've now told iOS not to allow Spotify to use your cellular data.

Disable Mobile Data Usage in the Spotify App

Spotify has many hidden features you should familiarize yourself with to have the best experience. One such feature is the ability to limit access to content through Wi-Fi. You can rest assured that you'll avoid costly data overage charges by disabling mobile data usage.

To disable mobile data usage in the Spotify app, here's what you need to do:

  1. From the Spotify home page, tap the Settings gear icon.
  2. Scroll down and tap Audio Quality.
  3. By default, you'll see that Download Using Cellular is enabled. But you can tap the toggle to turn it off.

Now that you've told iOS and Spotify not to use your cellular data, it's still possible to listen to music and podcasts when not connected to either. All you need to do is download your playlists and podcasts to your device rather than stream them.

How to Download Music From Spotify for Offline Listening

There are two kinds of content on Spotify: static and dynamic. You can download both types of content without using cellular data.

Static content includes albums, playlists, or podcasts you've liked or saved to your library that don't update regularly. When you download static content, you only need to download it once.

Dynamic content includes playlists such as your Release Radar, Discover Weekly, or New Music Friday playlists—any playlist the app curates based on your listening habits and preferences. Dynamic content needs updating on a daily or weekly basis. When you download dynamic content, it will download in the background automatically.

The steps for downloading both types of content are the same:

  1. On the playlist, song, or podcast screen, tap the gray down arrow icon. It will turn green once the content is downloaded.

That's it. Since you've changed your iOS and Spotify settings, playlists will download only when connected to Wi-Fi. This is just one of the many ways to improve your Spotify experience on mobile.

Never Worry About Using Your Data With Spotify Again

You've now set up your iPhone and the Spotify app to download the latest music and podcasts without using cellular or mobile data.

All you need to do is connect to Wi-Fi occasionally, then open Spotify so that your dynamic playlists can update (or download the latest podcast to save it to your phone), and voilà! You're on your way to singing in the car without using (or paying for) more data.
