I've recently added a wireless router to my home network connected by cable Internet. Now, every time my brother is online with his PC, it seems like my desktop slows to a snail's pace. What is wrong?

If you mean your Internet speed is slowing down then it's purely because you're sharing bandwidth with your brother. My housemate is a big online gamer and if I'm trying to stream video while she's playing it's very noticeable.

Start downloading big files on your pc when no one else is online.and note that when downloading is in progress, your browsing gets slow, similarly when your bother does the same on his pc, your browsing gets slow because you are using the same connection.Downloading includes Watching online videos and playing games, all this requires big files to be downloaded in your temp folder. You will not notice the decreased in speed when the other person is just checking mails or facebook or browsing fast websites which doesn't require much of the bandwidth, because the files it downloads are very small. If its only when the other person is online, I don't think there can be a problem in your pc.

Hello, are you referring to your internet connection slowing down or your computer?  If you are referring to your network connection slowing down, it is because of the extra usage of the other computer, specially is there is some  downloading, streaming, online gaming, etc, going on on the other computer.  You could check if your router has QoS enabled.  QoS stands for quality of service, it might help a little bit.  Here is more info on the subject:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quality_of_servicehttp://support.netgear.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/972/~/how-qos-improves-performancehttp://compnetworking.about.com/od/networkdesign/g/bldef_qos.htmIf you are referring to your computer slowing down, let me know.
