I notice sometimes Microsoft Update just adds new updates and doesn't delete the new installation.

For example Windows XP SP2 (old) update Windows XP to SP3 (new), the old SP2 installation is still there, but I've already updated to SP3.

Another example: Microsoft C++ 2005 (0ld) and Microsoft c++ 2010 (new) installation.

Could I delete the old installation to save some space? If not what's the reason? Thanks! :)

sure you can extend C with other free space, my guess will be is to move all files that are on the partition next to drive C to another free space then extend C.If it is trouble then reinstall windows, you can also plug new hard drive, clone windows to new location, delete the old windows and boot from the new hard drive.

Yes you can, but allow a program such as Microsoft's built in Disk Cleaner tool do it for you. Read the rest for more info:If you are running low on disk space, I would recommend getting ride of junk files on your computer. Some easy ways to make space would involve backing rarely used content to a CD/DVD or USB drive, uninstalling rarely used programs, deleting duplicate files, and use a maintenance/cleaning program such as Glary Utilities or CCleaner. Alternatively to to using one of those programs, you can use the built in "Disk Cleaner" tool that is in Windows. Right click on one of your partitions "such as C:" and click Disk Cleaner while on the General Tab. Select all of the "junk" files you want to delete. You can select all of them if you want. After clicking OK, the program will delete all of the "junk" and now your system will have that much more disk space. One more thing you an do is use a tool like WinDirStat to see what files are taken up how much space in a visual form. It's a free tool as well.The only reason not to is to revert back in case something happens, but that is not very likely. You would be better off doing good old fashion "regular" backups.

You can remove the uninstall files for Microsoft hotfixes and service packs if your system is operating properly. If you choose to do so, use a tool such as CCleaner for the job. Items like the C++ runtimes should NOT be removed. Despite the 2005 runtime being older than the 2008 or 2010 runtimes, various programs installed on your system may require the older version. Programs written with C++ 2005/2008/2010 require that specific version of the runtime to operate properly. These runtimes are NOT interchangeable.
