Hi,The tools recommended above is ok. But i want to recommend you another software which has many great functions and is free for home users. It can backup your hard drive in a short time. Maybe you can have a look at it and decide to choose the most suitable tool for yourself:http://www.todo-backup.com/products/home/free-backup-software.htm

you could also use a program like macrium reflect free which can save whole drives or partitions to another drive or partition and can also create a LINUX based recovery startup disk, that can restore complete disks or selected folders in case of a major crash.

http://support.wdc.com/product/downloaddetail.asp?swid=119&wdc_lang=enthe only limit is that you have to have a WD brand HD attached to the system. It doesn't have to be involved in the backup or restore, just attached.

Masket, one thing to keep in mind here, if you want to clone the entire hard drive (incl. system files etc) then you need a program which is able to copy system files and files used by OS as well. Most of such programs will do the copy/cloning job outside Windows, usually before the Windows starts.

Apart from the options suggested above, if you can get around your computer easily, you could always use Clonezilla, which is a Live Linux Distro that is specifically made to create clone images of your hard disks/partitions. The learning curve is a bit steep, but you can get down to it using the tutorials on the site.http://clonezilla.org/

You can also use the windows back up on both, XP:http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/setup/learnmore/bott_03july14.mspxor Vista and Windows 7:http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-7/features/backup-and-restore.aspxand automate the process.
