Google's Pixel 5 boasts some cool new features, fancy camera tricks, and even a bigger 6-inch screen along with fast 5G speeds.

While 5G is nice and the 90Hz screen will make apps and games smooth, it's everything else that new we think owners will love. Here are some all-new Pixel 5 features that might tempt you to get the new device.

1. Hold for Me (Call Screening)

With each new phone or software update, the Google Assistant gets more helpful and a bit smarter. Google has already added call screening to get rid of those pesky automated spam calls. Now, with Android 11 and the Pixel 5, you can take that a step further and use the “Hold for Me” feature.

The Pixel 5 Can Stay On Hold For You

Hold for Me does exactly what it sounds like: Google Assistant will sit and wait on hold while you go about your day instead of sitting and listening to elevator music for way too long.

Whenever you call your bank, cable provider, or any other company that puts you on hold, you’ll see a popup on the Pixel 5 asking if you’d like Google Assistant to hold for you. Simply tap the popup to activate the feature, put your phone down, and get back to something productive.

Once someone on the other end answers the phone, the Assistant will alert you by making a little noise and vibrating your device, so you know to pick up and continue the conversation. The only concern is whether the representative sticks around long enough for you to say hello before hanging up.

In case you didn't know, this same technology allows Google Assistant to book restaurant reservations or hair appointments for you. It's smart enough to know when you’re on hold, listening to a pre-recorded message, or if a real human is on the phone. It’s pretty neat, so definitely try this if you pick up the Pixel 5.

Unfortunately, Hold for Me currently only available in English and in the US.

2. Live View in Google Maps

Another neat feature on the Pixel 5 is the Live View mode inside Google Maps on Android 11. This is basically a live view combined with location sharing, which is pretty neat.

To use it, you'll need to have location sharing turned on. Then in Google Maps, tap on a friend’s icon and select Live View. You will now see where exactly your friend is and how far they are from you. It's just like the regular street view, only now it shows an overlay of your friend's location.

3. Battery-Sharing Reverse Wireless Charging

These days, most phones and accessories support wireless charging. This conveniently allows you to charge a device without plugging anything in by just dropping the phone on a wireless charging pad or stand.

And while that’s neat, Google took the idea a step further on the latest Pixel model.

The Pixel 5 supports a slick feature known as reverse wireless charging, called Battery Share here. It allows you to charge another device just by setting it on the back of your Pixel 5 phone (without any wires required).

To use it, turn on Battery Share at Settings > Battery > Battery Share. Then, just flip the Pixel 5 over and try putting a modern iPhone, Pixel Buds, or another device with wireless charging on the back. When you do, it will magically start charging from your Pixel's battery.

In a way, it turns the Pixel 5 into a battery pack. And on the same Settings page, you can set a threshold where your Pixel will stop charging the device on its back, allowing you to preserve your phone's battery.

We've seen this functionality from Samsung, Huawei, and others, so it's good that Google is on board too.

4. Astrophotography and Cinematic Pan Camera Modes

You probably know that you won’t get outstanding photos of the moon, stars, or night sky with your phone. It's also tough to capture decent video while panning on a smartphone. However, try taking a few photos or videos with the new Pixel 5, and you’ll be pleasantly surprised. That’s because Google’s neat camera modes do all the heavy lifting.

And while Google improved the Astro mode on the Pixel 5, it's the even newer Cinematic Pan mode you'll love.

Cinematic Pan should help Pixel 5 owners get professional-looking video shots without dedicated camera equipment. Simply open the camera and choose Cinematic from the available modes to start panning beautiful videos.

Speaking of this, the Pixel 5 can record 4K video at 60FPS and do "Portrait Lighting" like the iPhone.

5. Smart Device Controls

As smart home products become more prevalent, many more people have added them to their homes. These include smart speakers, thermostats, lights, or connected smart home security cameras.

Conveniently, Google added a new section on Pixel 5's power menu (in Android 11) that allows for quick and easy control of all smart devices in your home. This works without ever opening an app.

Simply press and hold down the power button near the top-right side of the Pixel 5 to access its new smart device controls menu.

Here you’ll see the usual power off and reboot options, plus some Google Pay shortcuts for contactless payments. But below all that, you’ll find a wide array of smart home controls. You’ll see a list of all your smart devices (up to six at a time) and can quickly tap to turn on/off the lights, lock the front door, or even check your security cameras.

It’s quick, easy, and seamlessly integrated into the Pixel 5. This function is also available on older Pixels running Android 11.

The Pixel 5 Has a Lot to Offer

These are just a few of the many cool Pixel 5 features you can try out. We didn't even mention that the Pixel 5 has a fingerprint scanner again, which the Pixel 4 model lacked.

And no matter what device you're on, Google's latest Android 11 has even more neat features. Updates like Smart Reply in the keyboard, improved app suggestions, better text copying tools, improved customization options, and an extreme battery saver are all quite helpful.

We recommend you try all these features on your phone when it gets Android 11.
