I have an older IBM Thinkpad with a 20 GB HDD that I want to replace with a new 80 GB HDD.

I really don't want to mess with re-installing software etc. What's the best and easiest way to do this, besides shelling out a grip of $$$ to have it done at a shop?

You want software that will clone, not just backup, your hard drive. On a Mac, Carbon Copy Cloner will do the trick. On a PC, EASEUS Disc Copy is a free program that should do the trick. It is not quite as simple to use as CCC for Mac, though, because it will only create an exact clone - ie, your new 80 GB HD will appear to be only 20 GB. EASEUS recommends use of their Partition Manager software to subsequently extend the system partition.http://www.easeus.com/disk-copy/feature.htm

I prefer Clonezilla for cloning hard drive. The ISO is free and available for download at: http://clonezilla.org/clonezilla-live.php and burn it. It's a bootable CD. The tutorial from Wikihow, http://www.wikihow.com/Use-Clonezilla, is quite clear

I agree about Clonezilla and also suggest using Parted Magic to resize your new hard drive after using Clonezilla. This is for same reason as stated for the tool mentioned belowParted Magic can be downloaded here http://distrowatch.com/?newsid=06665
