How to Change Your Email Name and Address in Gmail

There are many possible reasons why you might want to change your email address or name in Gmail. Maybe you created your email address in your early teenage years and gave it a ridiculous name. On the other hand, maybe you're just looking for a change.

Email Name vs. Email Username

Most people assume that their email name and their email username are the same things. However, that is not the case.

Your email name is the sender name that is displayed when you send an email. Your email username, on the other hand, is your email address. Your Gmail username is also your Google username by default.

You can easily access this information in Gmail by tapping or hovering your mouse over your profile picture. Changing your Gmail name is quite simple, however, changing your email username/address can be a bit tricky.

How to Change Your Email Name

As a default setting, your Gmail name and your Google account name are the same. If you want to change it, you can choose to either change only your Gmail name, or change your Google account name.

How to Change Your Gmail Name Only

You can’t change your email name from the Gmail mobile app, so this guide will walk you through the process on the browser site.

Sign in to your Google account by entering your username and your password.
Click the Gear icon on the top right corner of your screen, and select See all settings.
Click the Accounts and Import tab.
Right under the Send mail as header, click the edit info button.
Enter the new name you want your emails to display, tick the button next to it, and click the Save Changes button.

How to Change Your Google Account Name

Changing your Google account name will change your Gmail name. This will also change your name across all other Google apps. If you still wish to proceed, here's how to do this:

Sign in to your Google account.
Click the Personal info tab in the left sidebar.
Under the Basic info tab, click the Name tab displaying the name you want to change.
You can change your first name, your last name, or both. Then, click the Save button.

Can You Change Your Gmail Address/Username?

It is not possible for you to change your existing Google username or email address—Google just doesn’t allow it.

However, you can create a new account and then import the data from your old account into it.

How to Import Emails to a New Address

Create a new Google account and sign in to it.
Click the gear icon on the top right corner of your screen, and then select See all settings.
Click the Accounts and Import tab.
Then, under Import mail and contacts, click the Import mail and contacts button.
A new window will pop up. Type in your old email username, and click the Continue button.
The new window will ask you to sign in to your old account. Sign in to it, and then click the Continue button.
A new window will pop up and ask you to choose an account to continue to ShuttleCloud Migration. Choose your old account. Gmail ShuttleCloud Migration will ask you for permission to access it. Click Allow, and close the window.
Go to the first popup window and select the import options for your old account. You can import contacts, mail, and all new mail for the following 30 days from your old account to your new account.
After the process is over, a message will appear. Click the Ok button, go to your new Gmail account, refresh the page, and that’s it! You can now see the emails from your old account in a folder with your old account’s name.
