Whenever I try to change my MSN display name, it instantly changes back. I've tried different computers, different operation systems and different IM applications to no avail.

Additional info:

* Has been going on for months, so waiting it out is hardly an option.

* Windows Live Messenger can keep the name changed for the session's duration. Reverts when logging in again.

* Unlike some (related?) Google cases, it doesn't display my email address. It's a previous display name that's set in stone.

I took a look around and you don't seem to be the only one with that problem. Considering that name display is being pulled from Microsoft's servers, it is probably a bug with your account on their servers. If you have already re-installed, I know it's a pill, but I would write to them:http://windowslivehelp.com/product.aspx?productid=2They probably need to reset something on their end.

Have you tried uninstalling it and re-installing it?As far as I am aware, in the new versions of Windows Live Messenger, your display name and details etc are uploaded to the MSN/Live Spaces/Profile site, so maybe another application that you have used it constantly reverting it back?In that link it gave you is this:https://*.storage.msn.com"Storage of the user tile, personal status message, and display name for a user so that the user can have the same set of information across all Windows Live experiences on work and home computers; (Simple Object Access Protocol [SOAP] over HTTPS)"So maybe it can't connect to that website.Sorry that I can't be of more help.

No, I know how I should be able to change my display name. That box has never been de-ticked. :-)I'm pretty sure I'm facing a bug/error/glitch/watchacallit of some kind or another and wondered if anyone knows a way around it.

Simon, didn't you ask this previously? In MSN, go to Tools --> Options --> Sign In. Under general there is "Use the same display picture and personal message wherever I sign in". Try ticking it if it isn't.Also, you may want to read this in case anything is blocked http://support.microsoft.com/kb/927847EDIT: Also, I am using a gmail email address for Window Live Messenger, and it keeps mine intact.
