Are flash memory devices jinxed by Windows 7? Vista? Chromebook?

For the 3rd time my data has been ruined somehow when plugging in USB 3.0 thumbdrive into a Chromebook (Samsung 3G, circa 2013) and then moving to Windows Vista desktop machine (USB 2.0); or another desktop with Windows 7 (usb 3.0).

A similar catastrophe happened with an SD card (256mb -used on point and shoot Canon camera). Now it is unreadable "memory card error" and can't be formatted by camera.

Is this a file structure incompatibility? USB 2 vs 3 problem? Other? What to do to avoid this disaster in future?
