Capcom recently fell victim to a particularly vicious ransomware attack. Sensitive data was taken hostage by a well-known hacking collective, with a ransom that Capcom was to pay in Bitcoin.

The brand, famous for its Street Fighter games, has now confirmed the locations of those who were affected by the hack and what data was stolen.

Capcom Falls Victim to Ragnar Locker Ransomware

At the beginning of November, Capcom fell victim to a cyber attack, acknowledging as much in a short press release.

The original press release didn't confirm what data, if anything, had been compromised. However, an ethical hacker managed to locate a ransomware note which appeared to point to the Ragnar Locker ransomware group.

Now, Capcom has issued a press release confirming the details of the security breach. So we now know who was affected and what data was stolen by the hackers.

Gamers All Over the World Are Affected

According to the press release, both staff at Capcom and gamers had their data stolen by the Ragnar Locker group.

Capcom has issued facts relating to the data breach. Firstly, it has confirmed that the Ragnar Locker hackers did indeed carry out the attack.

Secondly, it has confirmed the locations of those affected and detailed how they were affected.

We have organized the location and nature of each breach below:

  • North America: Capcom Store member information (approx. 14,000 items). Names, birthdates, and email addresses.
  • North America: Esports operations website members (approx. 4,000 items). Names, email addresses, and gender information.
  • Japan: Customer service video game support help desk information (approx. 134,000 items). Names, addresses, phone numbers, and email addresses.

Capcom has also confirmed a number of other breaches in US territories. These involve shareholders and former employees and, as such, won't affect any members of the public.

What Is Capcom Doing About the Attack?

At the moment, the matter is still under investigation. Capcom is carrying out its own internal explorations into the event while continuing to cooperate with the relevant authorities.

If you think that you have been a victim of the attack, you don't need to worry at this stage. No credit card data was stolen, so those details are safe if you have ever bought anything from Capcom.
