I'm looking for a great, good quality screen, and audio (mic) recorder for recording game plays for YouTube. But am having quiet a hard time with finding a legit one. If anyone knows a free (or cheap) recorder please help!

Most gamers that record their gameplay use FRAPS, then do a voice-over through a video editor like Windows (or live) Movie Maker. http://www.fraps.com/ Others use XSplit, obs project (obsproject.org), D3D Gear, etc. The main issue that you may have is the setup. Do you have a separate disk to record to that is not your OS hard drive? Are you recording at 30 frames per second (YouTube only uses 30 frames per second)? What are the specifications of your computer? Do you have unnecessary background services turned off (use IOBit Game Booster for this)? Most of these programs do not record of of your Mic because it would use much more resources and cause more lag issues (FRAPS alone can and most likely will cause dropped frame rates). Most people edit their videos and do a voice-over to make sure the video quality is good and a good quality narration can be added.

Sorry, missed the Linux OS part. Disregard the above comment as it may not apply to you.

I'm sorry I missed that your o/s was Linux. Camstudio can be installed on Linux using Wine, however. Here is a link that will show you how!http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=version&iId=7433&iTestingId=38091&bShowAll=true

I'm going to have to start paying attention to that information at the end of a post too...Apparently Wink works on Linux as well, see: http://www.debugmode.com/wink/download.htm. Notes for Wink Linux users: "Wink requires GTK 2.4 or higher. The installer does not create any links/shortcuts. If you want shortcuts you will have to create them yourself. For a list of known issues in the linux version, view the readme.txt file in the wink directory after installation. If the NumLock key is switched on, hotkeys in Wink do not work under Linux. So make sure to turn off the NumLock key while capturing."

Don't forget Wink, http://www.debugmode.com/wink/. It can work as a video capturer if you set the screenshot capture rate to a high number.

I have used CamStudio screen recording software for years and have found it extremely user-friendly and quite reliable. Another great thing about it, the price! It's free! The current version is good, but it did require the locating, downloading and installing of some needed .dll files and I do not recommend that for someone who is unfamiliar with them. So, I would recommend that you try CamStudio 2.0 which is an older version but has all the .dll files that you need contained in it.Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7 operating systems are supported. You can find the download here:http://camstudio.soft32.com/free-download/index/version/370193/ Thank you for the question and happy recording!
