Try ubuntu linux with a long term support (lts)..or just stick to win7 with lowering your graphic (ea: disable aero cuz it takes alot of memory, gadgets ect..) but you can always try ubuntu, its free and easy ..i woundt recommend win8 at all

Give Joli OS a try in a dual boot mode with Windows. It has a Window Installer, so if you do not want, you can simply uninstall like any other windows program. No need to partition HDD to install.

it is a matter of choice and what you want to do with this hardware. I suggest you upgrade to windows 8 or stay with windows 7 for a time being if you feel uncomfortable with windows 8. But windows 8 is a much better OS.

Windows 8 will work very well on your PC. but one thing to mention is that windows 8 is optimized for touch screen device. although will work on non touch devices as well but that is just like a pain.If you want to upgrade then i can only recommend windows 7 ultimate which is newer that windows 7 pro and has bit locker. although your current OS is perfect enough if you do not need bit locker. If you are eager to change and can tolerate few dozens of bugs and can suffer learning curve Ubuntu and its unity desktop will also work on your PC and have a totally different look, feel and experience.

if you wish to installing windows 8 at your PC, you can use the 32 bit version easily. because if you want the 64 bit version you need 1gb more of DDR

Windows 8 will give a performance boost, I highly recommend upgrading. 32 bit will be what you need, also shown as x86 during the installation. 32 bit has a maximum of 4GB RAM. You only have 3GB, so you will be fine.

You should upgrade to windows 8, it became awesome (my opinion). If you choose this options, then get a 32bit version of windows8. And don't forget that, windows 8 designed for tablets, you will need to upbraid the new way of using your OS. The reason why i chose it is that they did some really nice optimization, works smoother, have a really nice task manager, and what I really really like is that the boot time is deacreased so much, i totally love it! And of course if you love the windows 8 apps, now you will allowed to use it :) I hope i could help.

Windows 8 should run on those specs no problem as it was designed for mobile devices with a lot less power then what you have there. ;-)
