I used to use a service called "LogMeIn" but since it cancelled its free plan I don't have remote access to my personal laptop which I keep at home and turned on. My laptop is running Windows 7 but not anything like an "ultimate" or a "professional" version - just your average "home" version. How can I remote connect and operate my laptop without LogMeIn?

Thank you,

Alisa

I agree with TeamViewer as it is easy and free to use. NoMachine seems better, especially the connection and visual quality, but may not be as simple to set up for novice users. Both are great remote desktop applications that have multiple OS support, including Windows, Mac OSX, Linux, Android, and iOS.For Windows PC-to-PC connection, you can just use the built-in

Windows Remote Desktop application. Most people, though, prefer other methods of remote access, such as mentioned above and in other posts.

I'm a great fan of TeamViewer, which is both excellent, and free for private use. It is fast, easy to use and works with lots of different platforms (Windows, Mac, Linux, Android, iOS).

Try NoMachine from https://www.nomachine.com/ . It is totally FREE. I shifted from TeamViewer after finding this.

Hi Diana,I definitely think that TeamViewer is the way to go here. I've used it extensively in the past, and it works flawlessly – I've remote controlled PCs in the UK from Australia with minimal fuss. You can find what you need at: http://www.teamviewer.com/Take a look at their available downloads and note the differences. They offer a remote client for accessing your own PC, but also light versions for deploying on friends/family/clients PCs to make it easy to provide support. The vanilla "all in one" version should suffice for what you need, and because you're using it at home you fall under the "free for personal use" category. There is an alternative in the form of Splashtop, but I'm not sure if their free service is that great, and I've personally found it a bit fiddly in the past while trying to deploy on remote machines (they may have improved it now). You can read up on it if you want: http://www.splashtop.com/Good luck, let us know how it goes.Tim

TeamViewer does not require you to do any port forwarding at all. Everything works over ports that are normally open. When installing, I would suggest first installing it on the machine you want to use to control others. After installing it there, create a TeamViewer account with a good password. When you later install on the machines you wish to control, log in with your TeamViewer account, then set up the host function on the machine. It will store that machine's credentials in your TeamViewer account so you don't need to remember its ID number and password as well.
