You can also use a device such as the Keedox Mini Multimedia Player, which supports up to 2TB hard drives, has A/V and HDMI ports, USB port, and an SD card slot. I cannot attest to the quality of the product, but should work to perform what you are wishing to do, and it is compact so you can take it with you anywhere you go. http://www.1sale.com/products/keedox-mini-multi-media-player-w-full-hd-1080p-upscaling-hdmi-av-out-usb-sdhc/
