My wife bought me a Dell all-in-one computer for Christmas and it stinks. It's running Win 8.1 with an AMD E1-2500 APU with Radeon Graphics, runs at 1.4 GHz and has a multi-touch screen. It is slower than slow.

I was going to build a system but she thought she was doing me a favor and bought it to save me the trouble and the salesman at Office Depot sucked her in.

How can I improve things? It was suggested by a friend in IT that I install Linux Mint and run it from a USB stick in the hopes that Win 9 will improve things and leave me the option of going back to windows in the future.

Frankly, at this point, I am better served by a Chromebook I bought cheap.

Yes, using an AMD-E1 processors are slow ... Pretty much any version of Linux will work better, as Linux places less of a load on the processor, and the graphics capabilities of the the E1 are quite reasonable. Definitely worth a shot!

You could try the suggestions here: http://www.askvg.com/master-tutorial-to-make-your-windows-8-super-fast/.Change the paging file maximum and minimum size to the same values, something around the Windows recommended size. Also, go into the AMD Catalyst Control Center and find the setting to apply video quality settings to internet video.
