I want to uninstall Windows 7 from my laptop, install it on a PC which I only use occasionally, and then install Ubuntu on my laptop. The problem I envisage is that Microsoft might not allow me to move Windows 7 from my laptop to my PC. If there is a way to do this, the rest of the operation is easy. I am a very happy Ubuntu user.

Install Ubuntu dual boot option, so you have two OS (Windows & Ubuntu)

This is why I have used Linux for the past 8 years!

No. Even though you paid for it and you own it, Microsoft are in control of what you do with it.Best advice: put GNU/Linux on your machine and never pay Microsoft again.

I think its not possible if your windows is specifically licensed for your Laptop. Other wise you can try installing it sometime it works.

it's OEM version you can't install it only on the laptop that it comes with .
2012-12-20 10:48:15
you can't. try ubuntu. it is free, good interface, no virus problems.

You can upgrade to win8 with your 7 license then use the given serial to install win 8 in your desktop.

Author : Jayesh VarotariyaURL :Comment:try to copy you windows sireal key and use again,it work sum time....What happened to the above comment? I received it via email alert, yet I cannot find it posted here!!!Thank you Jayesh. I will try what you suggested. After all, I am licenced to use Win 7 on ONE computer and that is what I will be doing. So MS shouldn't find any objection.

Horrendous spelling and grammar probably didn't help. It was deleted, most likely.
2012-12-20 05:56:31
if it is licensed for only one pc then you cannot.
2012-12-20 05:50:23
No, you can't use it.
2012-12-20 03:08:54
No mate, u can't use it if it's for only 1pc....

What really bugs me is that I am not going to be using it on more than one computer. This is a simple transfer of one and the same operating system which I was forced to purchase against my wishes.
2012-12-21 15:01:47
Actually, you purchased it at a far cheaper price because it was bundled with that laptop, than you would have paid if you'd purchased through retail for any PC. It's not that hard to understand OEM licensing.

That's one reason I hate MS. The other is having to check for virus attacks. I shall stick to Linux.Thank you all for your help.

No it's a heavily discounted OEM licence tied to the specific machine it was sold with.
2012-12-19 23:43:48
one license / 1pc you cant install in another pc
2012-12-19 22:35:37
No, unless it is licensed for more than 1 pc I dont believe you can do it.
