I have been instructed to run Norton anti-virus eraser. When I tried to run Norton eraser I received a message that temp files were not Win32. The norton eraser will not run. Can I downgrade? What else can I do?

Hello, I am assuming you were recommended to use this norton tool to remove virus? You do not necessarily have to run that tool to remove virus, you could try the following tools:Superantispyware portable:http://www.superantispyware.com/portablescanner.html?tag=SAS_HOMEPAGEMalwarebytes:http://www.malwarebytes.org/products/Make sure to select free version. Run full scans with both of the softwares above and delete any entries found. Once both scans give you clean results, run a full scan with your antivirus of choice. Once all the scans give you clean results, make sure to remove all restore points and then create a new one. Keep in mind, sometimes it is necessary to run this tools in safe mode.

Absolutely not. Because they are the same system, but different platforms. Example: If your computer is more than 4 GB, you can install the 32 bit version, but that version is not going to support memory but 4GB. You can ask Symantec if they have the 64 version, or else, you have to purchase a 64 bit version one.

Yes running in compatibility mode is the right solution.

You can't. It's not downgrading. Windows 64-bit is a different product from the 32-bit. Some programs aren't working well in the 64-bit version so the best you can hope is searching for replacement or asking the support whether the 64-bit version will be available or not if you can't make it work under compatibility mode.

no you cannot downgrade windows 7 64 bit to 32 bit. you have to reinstall it with 32 bit system. in other ways you can use 32 bit system..1. Dual boot system in this case you can keep windows 7 64 bit & 32 bit but in different drive and can run one system at a time.2. you can use virtual computer such as vmware workstation, virtual machine by sun-oracle and you can install windows 7 32 bit system in it. you have to start windows 7 32 bit after starting windows 7 64 bit.Any way windows 7 64 bit is better and more secure than windows 7 32 bit.

Gray, if you are running 64bit Windows OS then try to download a 64bit application program(Software) of Norton antivirus eraser. Some apps are of both 64bit & 32bit version. You can't install 64bit version in 32bit operating System whereas you can run all version of software in 64bit OS but you have to make sure that your drivers are up to date otherwise some 32bit software won't work. I have faced this sort of problem previously. You can also try similar types of software which will do the work for you. I hope your problem will be resolved.

Do you mean Norton Power Eraser? This is a very aggressive antivirus program and should only be used as a last resort. If you aren't careful in choosing what it wants to delete, you could destroy your system. Temp files can be deleted with housecleaning software like Piriform Ccleaner or Glary Utilities.

Windows OS 32 and 64 bits are not upgardeable or downgradeable from each other. Request you to provide correct info please as othewise it may confuse people. Answering is a responsibility and we should refrain, if we are not 100% sure.

You dont necessarily need to run Norton anti-virus eraser. I assume you want to remove all traces of Norton? If that is correct then download the Windows Installer Cleanup Tool from here: http://www.softpedia.com/get/Security/Secure-cleaning/Windows-Installer-CleanUp-Utility.shtml(Yes it works with Windows 7 64bit). Run it and check any traces of Norton it finds, then go to the Program (x86) folder in system disk/partition and delete it.Run the reg cleaner in CCleaner and you should be good to go.

EDITIf I am on the right track and you want to remove Norton which is what the anti-virus eraser does then try this link: http://www.downloadcrew.com/article/10805-norton_removal_tool it is for 64bit systems as well as 32bit.

would dual booting 32 and 64 work for you. some 32bit applications will work on 64 due to WOW64 but from what I gather unfortunately Virus protection Malware fighters and Firewalls don't.You probably already have but have you tried to run the program in compatability mode?.

If, as @Rajaa points out, running it in compatibility mode is successful, could you please log back in and mark "Resolved". Good luck and post back if you encounter further problems.

Unfortunately, you cannot downgrade from Windows 7 64bit to 32bit (in that case you have to erase and totally re-install the 32bit OS which doesn't serve your purpose). However, Windows 7 do support to run programs in compatibility mode. Right click on the Norton Eraser icon and select Properties and then select the compatibility tab and tick the box that says run this program in compatibility mode for and then select Windows XP with SP3 and see if it works for you or not. Best of Luck!!!
