Hello, I want to convert 3GP videos taken from my son's birthday party to MP4 so I can play them on iPad.

I've found some solution in this post: https://www.makeuseof.com/answers/conver-3gp-videos-mp4/ but I don't like any of them. I have no idea about QuickTime and think that VLC is a player rather than a converter.

Hope someone can help me.

Try HandBrake from http://handbrake.fr/ or FreeMake Video Converter from http://www.freemake.com/free_video_converter/ . Both are FREE and pretty good.

VLC is incredibly flexible and can certainly be used to convert files. Just choose "Convert/Save..." from the file menu and you'll see the options there. Most of the other options on the thread also look very sensible.
