I have a new desktop. It's Windows 8 but I know it didn't come with Bluetooth. I want to connect to the internet without a cable and without paying $50 or so a month with a stick .

Is there some kind of inexpensive device I could use which would give me access? I saw something called hot spot but don't know if it works for desktops.

You need to have either Wi-fi or LAN connection. You can also connect via your mobile if you have Bluetooth in your system. You can connect to hotspot if your system has wi-fi adapter.

We would need more information to be able to give suggestions that you could use. Does your desktop have a wireless internet adapter? What are your normal uses for the internet; video streaming, web browsing, music streaming, downloads, gaming, etc.? What region are you located? If you lived in the U.S. and have a wireless internet adapter for Wi-Fi access, you could purchase a Wi-Fi hotspot device from FreedomPop, and you would receive 500 megabytes of data usage free per month. If you needed more, you could pay for larger data packages per month. FreedomPop offers a few other devices for internet, and even offers free cell phone service and paid packages for extra talk time, messaging, and data usage. http://www.freedompop.com
