There's a new Nintendo Switch on the horizon. The main headline for this version of the console is that it has an OLED screen, but it also comes with other improvements like increased internal storage and a wider kickstand.

It disappointed some people that this updated version of the Nintendo Switch didn't have more of a wow factor. However, there's still lots to be impressed about, which makes the Nintendo Switch (OLED Model) ripe for a day one purchase.

What Is the Nintendo Switch (OLED Model)?

The Nintendo Switch first launched in March 2017. It's a hybrid console that can play games handheld and on the TV.

In 2019, an updated version of the Switch launched with improved battery life, but otherwise the console remained unchanged and sales of the Switch continued to grow.

For a long time, there was speculation of a Switch Pro. This turned out to be the Nintendo Switch (OLED Model), which launches in October 2021 for $349.99.

As we reported, the OLED model of the Switch comes with various improvements. While not the complete console overhaul that some were expecting, the Nintendo Switch (OLED Model) should still make for an excellent iteration on an already impressive console.

With that in mind, here's why we think the OLED Switch is worth a day one purchase.

1. The OLED Display Offers Vibrant Colors

The dominant feature of this new console (it's in the name, after all) is that the console has an OLED screen.

The current Switch has an LCD panel, which is serviceable, but OLED has a number of benefits: accurate color reproduction, high brightness and contrast, and good viewing angles.

This means that your games will look far more vibrant on the new model when compared to the original. It's one of those upgrades that you'll truly appreciate if you hold the two consoles side-by-side.

There's a reason why most people choose to buy OLED TVs, if they can afford it.

2. The Screen Is Bigger

It's fun to play the Nintendo Switch on a TV, but it's arguably even better in handheld mode so that you can be up-close to the action and play games on the go.

While the standard Switch has a 6.2-inch screen, the Switch OLED model has a 7-inch screen. That might not sound like much on paper, but in reality it's a significant difference, especially when paired with the vibrant visuals of the OLED screen.

3. The Kickstand Is Sturdier

The current Switch has a kickstand that lets you prop the console up. Frankly, it's flimsy and easy to damage because it's so small. In fact, we'd forgive you for not even realizing that it had a kickstand!

That's why it's great to see that the new OLED model features a wider and sturdier kickstand that spans the full length of the console, which should stop your Switch unexpectedly falling over.

It's also adjustable, so you can tilt the console's screen to your desired viewing angle.

4. There's More Internal Storage

The standard Switch offers 32GB of internal storage. When you consider that The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild takes up 13.4GB, which is more than 40% of the space, it's easy to see how quickly that gets filled up, especially if you download lots of games.

That's why it's great that the Nintendo Switch (OLED Model) comes with 64GB of storage, which means you don't need to juggle your downloads so often.

Of course, you can always expand the Switch's storage with a microSD card, but it's nice to not have to buy anything extra.

5. Enhanced Audio In Handheld Mode

The Nintendo Switch (OLED Model) has onboard speakers, like the standard version of the console, but these have "enhanced audio".

It's not entirely clear what that means, as the new speaker's specifications haven't been revealed, but the ability to enjoy high-quality audio without needing to use decent headphones is not to be dismissed.

It means you can better appreciate the fast-paced tunes of Mario Odyssey or the relaxing music of Animal Crossing: New Horizons.

6. The Dock Has a Wired LAN Port

If you have a strong wireless network, you've likely enjoyed the online Switch experience without issue; whether that's watching one of the Switch's limited streaming services or battling in some online multiplayer.

However, some people need to rely on a wired Ethernet solution to get a stable connection, which meant buying a wired LAN adapter for the Switch.

That changes with the Nintendo Switch (OLED Model) because it comes with a built-in wired LAN port on the dock, in addition to the existing wireless capabilities. It means you can connect your Switch directly to your router without buying an adapter.

7. You Can Buy It in White

Over time, Nintendo have slowly released its console in more colors, including a fun Mario-themed Switch.

Never has the company released a white Switch... until now. While you can buy the OLED edition in the standard red and blue color scheme, you'd be missing out on the new white and black theme that looks incredibly sleek.

It'll tie in perfectly with the rest of your entertainment devices, especially if you own a PS5 or Xbox Series X.

8. It's Reasonably Priced

The Nintendo Switch (OLED Model) retails at $349.99, which is a not-insignificant increase over the standard model's $299.99 price tag.

That said, when you tally up all the improvements—the OLED screen, larger display, increased storage—then the cost is reasonable. When you consider the hours of entertainment the Switch is going to provide you, it offers an excellent bang for your buck.

Will You Buy the Switch on Day One?

Of course, whether you buy the new Nintendo Switch (OLED Model) when it launches is entirely up to you. If you only recently purchased a Switch, it's unlikely that the new features are enough to convince you.

However, if you've had your Switch since launch and think it's time to treat yourself, the OLED model will no doubt serve you well.
