Billboard is known primarily in the US for publishing its music charts, including the Hot 100 and Billboard 200.

Now, the company has announced that it's teaming up with Twitter to produce a new chart that will track what songs are being most talked about on the social media platform.

With the snappily named "Billboard Hot Trending Powered by Twitter Chart", Billboard plans for this chart to reflect what people are talking about on Twitter.

The chart will update daily. Billboard will create written stories and videos about the data, which will appear on its website and Twitter, and companies can pay to sponsor these.

According to Sarah Rosen, Twitter's head of entertainment partnerships, music is the most discussed topic on Twitter—new single releases, merchandise drops, festival appearances, and so on.

This new chart will not measure the number of plays a song has, but rather how often it's appearing in that day's discussions. For example, a song could be featured on a TV show or have a special anniversary, which would lead to lots of people tweeting about it.

Speaking to Bloomberg, Rosen said:

This is all tied to conversation. This is another cool way to slice and dice music data that’s different from what they are doing with all the other charts out there.

No doubt much of this chart will be driven by the younger generation, so it'll be interesting to see how different it is from traditional sales and stream-driven music charts.
