Thanks! I am used to working with so many different systems that I was asking in a more broad sense. My current task is to transfer files from a Windows 7 to Windows 8.1. I will set up the homegroup networking!

What operating systems and versions, such as Windows Vista, Mac OSX Mountain Lion, or Linux Ubuntu 12.04, are your computers using? If you give us mute information about your network, we can give you a more definitive answer fit the best method of transferring files.Windows 7 and up allows for Homegroup networking setup, but Windows XP must use another method, and other operating systems need a different setup as well. Windows Vista allows you to share public folders with other computers in the network. You can opt for cloud storage for easy access to files from any computer, so long as there is an internet connection. This may be fine for small files, but larger files would take a long time to upload and storage size is limited. Here is more information about transferring files in Windows Vista and 7: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/file-sharing-essentials#1TC=windows-7.For Windows XP: http://compnetworking.about.com/od/windowsxpnetworking/ht/sharewinxpfiles.htm.
