Science is a big and complicated subject, often broken down into different types of science, such as biology, chemistry, and physics, as well as social sciences, earth sciences, and so on. Learning science requires dedication and commitment, so any help you can get for that is worth pursuing.

Luckily, there are apps that make learning science easier than ever before. Here are the best education science apps available on Android and iPhone devices.

1. Periodic Table

periodic table

Periodic Table, by the Royal Society of Chemistry, helps you to remember all the elements, with a few features that allow you to customize the table depending on the elements you're trying to learn. When first opening the app, it asks you to input your level of scientific knowledge in order to generate the best data for you.

All the elements are displayed in landscape, with their symbols, and tapping on them will bring up a summary. This summary typically includes: the name of the element, the Atomic Number, and the Atomic Mass. You'll also see icons for a video and podcast explaining some facts about the element, and an Enlarge icon to display further information, such as the year of discovery, uses, and properties.

Through the Settings tab, you can change the temperature units, data preferences, and select the level of information you want for the various facts offered between Basic, Medium, and Full.

2. Daily Random Facts

Daily Random Facts isn't just about science, but you can set it up so that it sends you a feed of science-based facts. When starting the app, you can select how many facts you'd like a day, along with the start and end time of the feed.

The science facts do not always go very in-depth, but with the amount that feed through, you're bound to read some facts that teach you something new. Through the Settings tab, you can see facts that you've placed into your collection, and also Favorite or Search facts.

If you're a beginner, or just have a penchant for trivia, this is the app for you. These facts would be ideal for younger children who are looking to get into science, and combined with the best educational apps for kids would be a great tool in facilitating learning about science.

3. Periodic Table Quiz

Periodic Table Quiz works well in conjunction with the Periodic Table app, covered earlier. The app displays an element at the top of the screen, and you are timed on how quickly you can find it on the table. At the top left of the screen, the app will display how many times you've gotten it right or wrong.

You can use the Refresh icon to begin a new game, and with the Settings icon, you can enable or disable Sound and Change Language. Through the main menu, you can select how many elements you'd like to be tested on, but not which elements.

Periodic Table Quiz is quite a simple app, but is great if you need to memorize the periodic table for an upcoming test.

4. Little Alchemy

Mixing chemicals without knowing what you're doing is a dangerous thing to do. Luckily, the Little Alchemy app allows you to do just that without any risk or consequence.

On the right-hand side, you'll see elements such as air, earth, fire, and water. By dragging them over to the sandbox on the left, you can make combinations that unlock new results. For instance, mixing air and water will produce rain. Mixing rain and earth together will produce a plant.

Little Alchemy is aimed at a beginner level, but it can offer a harmless bit of fun for a younger family member learning more about science, particularly due to its friendly and gamified design. If you're looking for a more in-depth example of chemicals in action, then virtual science lab apps are a good port-of-call.

6. Science Dictionary by Farlex

Science Dictionary by Farlex provides a useful tool for learning more about phrases and words used in a scientific context. It's not just the phrases or words you actually search for that you'll learn about; the dictionary uses predictive text to show up similar words, which you can use as a tool to learn entirely new concepts as well.

Each word you search for will have a definition and a source of the information about it. The app will also display a list of other entries where it's mentioned. For instance, "electrolyte" is also mentioned in the "acid cell" definition.

Through the Menu, you can alter the font size, clear recent words you've searched for, and look at a list of recommended apps, amongst other things.
