Are the frequent Java updates for the Chrome browser really required or can we do without it?

Not needed for normal browsing . download and install latest version for every 2 months . if serious security patch released don't be lazy to update ..

Firstly, keep Java installed only if you use softwares that depends upon it.Oracle issues patches after long time when vulnerabilities are issued. So,it becomes utmost important task to update it and allow it to check for updates automatically.

You should update every instance of Java on your machine, whether in Chrome, on other browsers or standalone. Java is a network-aware environment and it is full of security holes, so leaving an out-of-date version on your system exposes it to a very real risk.

some desktop applications use java so if java is not up to date then application will not run or with problems.some online games requires java so updating java is important for security and running various web games/applications.

There is no need to update Java while using Chrome with automatic updates. Chrome automatically updates Java itself. However you will need to update the Java if you're using Internet Explorer. Thanks

Chrome does not automatically update Java. It MIGHT update the plug-in, but that does nothing for the actual runtime environment. If it does update the plug-in, that should be coordinated with the runtime as well.

Java updates have nothing to do with Chrome or any browser for that matter. Java is a standalone runtime environment on your computer and it is highly recommended to install the updates for security purposes.
