You’re getting ready to head out for a relaxing vacation, but suddenly you’re faced with a dilemma. You're killing it on your latest Apple Watch fitness streak, but you’re unsure how to keep that up on your trip.

Even if you’re sticking close to home, you might know from previous experience that you have a tough time reaching your goal without the hustle of your typical routine keeping you accountable.

So, what can you do about your Apple Watch Activity Rings while still getting some much-needed rest and relaxation? Here are some solutions.

Keep Filling Your Apple Rings on Vacation

You’ll likely want a break from your usual fitness activities when on vacation, but that doesn’t mean you need to ditch exercise altogether. There are many ways to get active that don't take time away from your itinerary or feel like a typical workout.

Depending on where you’re going, you can do some of the following:

  • Book a guided tour on foot or by bicycle.
  • Explore a theme park, zoo, or museum.
  • Enjoy an activity like mini-golf, zip-lining, swimming, or hiking.
  • Walk between restaurants and shops.
  • Create a scavenger hunt with photos.
  • Check out some local fitness classes.
  • Go dancing.

The activities you participate in don’t need to be strenuous for you to get moving and burn calories. In fact, dancing, fitness gaming, and play are some of the lesser-known Apple Watch workout types you can track on your device.

Of course, there’s nothing wrong with lounging and catching up on rest, but by changing things up, you'll add more variety to your vacation and keep yourself active.

Fill Your Apple Watch Activity Rings in the Morning

If you want to stick with your typical workout routine while away, try getting it done in the morning. Some people call this "eating the frog." By completing your most challenging task first thing, you’re getting it out of the way so that you can enjoy the rest of your day without having to worry about fitting it in or not.

Although it might not feel like it at first if you’re not in the mood for your workout, you’re starting your day on a good note. And once you're done, you’ll have the benefits of getting active and the feeling of achievement for pushing through.

Don’t worry if your morning session doesn’t fill your Move or Exercise ring completely. You might be able to get the rest of the way there by going for a walk or just doing the other activities you’re taking part in throughout the day. It's likely you'll want to get out and explore your destination while you're there.

An exercise session in the morning also won’t fill your stand goal, but it will count toward it, making it easier for you to achieve it as you go about your day.

Lower Your Apple Watch Activity Goals

As much as getting daily workouts in is good for you, exercise burnout is possible, especially for those with intense routines. When you need a break (remember that rest is important, too) but still want to be somewhat active, you can adjust your goals accordingly.

To change your Apple Watch activity goals, follow these steps:

  1. Open the Activity app on your watch.
  2. In the first tab that shows your three rings at the top, scroll to the bottom and tap Change Goals.
  3. Adjust your Move Goal using the plus and minus symbols on either side of the number shown on-screen.
  4. Hit Next to do the same to your Exercise Goal and Stand Goal.
  5. Tap Done, and you’re ready to go.

You can also switch off Stand Reminders using the Watch app on your iPhone. Once you’re in the app, go to the My Watch page and scroll down to Activity. There, you’ll find the Stand Reminders toggle. Toggle reminders off if you don’t want to feel that nudge when sitting on the beach or catching some extra sleep.

Even if you’re not heading out for vacation, it’s important to give yourself a break, not only from pushing yourself but from the notifications and prompts that do so too.

Forget About Your Apple Watch Activity Rings

Ultimately, you know what’s best for you. Breaking the streak on your watch won’t ruin the progress you've made toward your overall goal. In fact, taking a break for a day or two might do some good. So, the ideal option may just be to let it go and forget about your streak, goals, and rings for a few days. Take the time to enjoy your vacation.

While it can feel like your watch is telling you that you’re starting over, you know that you’re not. Once you’re back from vacation, you’ll pick up where you left off.

Stop Sharing Your Apple Watch Activity Rings

If you compete with a friend, you can mute their notifications and hide your progress by following these steps:

  1. Open the Activity app on your watch.
  2. Swipe to the second page called Sharing.
  3. Tap your friend’s stats.
  4. Scroll to the bottom and choose Mute Notifications or Hide My Activity.

One reason you might want to avoid step challenges or other fitness competitions with your friends is that they don’t take into account different lifestyles and fitness levels. Competitions based purely on numbers can force unhealthy comparisons to others that might turn into a negative influence. Your best bet may be to compete against yourself or treat the competition lightly and cheer for your friends from the sidelines while you're taking a break.

Your fitness is your business. If you don’t share your stats, no one will know you broke your streak unless you tell them!

Enjoy Your Vacation With or Without Your Apple Watch Activity Rings

Vacations are supposed to be refreshing. Rather than letting your Activity Rings get in the way, make some adjustments like trying out new activities, getting your fitness session in first thing, lowering your goals, or forgetting about them altogether.

While Activity Rings are helpful for keeping track of your goals and staying on top of them, you don’t need to let them run your life.
