Since the launch of Apple TV+, Apple has given customers that purchased a new iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, Apple TV, or Mac a one year free trial of the subscription service. Now, Apple is shortening its year-long free trial to just three months instead.

Apple Is Shortening the Apple TV+ Free Trial

Apple's year-long free trial of Apple TV+ with new device purchases is ending on June 30. As first reported by MacRumors, Apple has now updated its website to show that the free trial is being shortened to just three months instead.

Just in case anybody is wondering what Apple TV+ is, the service is a subscription similar to Netflix, Amazon Prime, and Disney+. Apple offers viewers a range of existing and original content.

Customers who have purchased a new Apple device can see the offer when they open up Apple TV+ for the first time on the device. They'll be now invited to try Apple TV+ free for three months (just like Apple Music) rather than a year.

The three-month trial promotion will begin on July 1, and devices purchased up until that date are still eligible for the one-year trial. So, customers who have recently purchased or are planning to purchase a new Apple device should make sure they redeem their Apple TV+ trial sooner rather than later.

While Apple hasn't explained why it's shortened the Apple TV+ free trial, it seems likely that it's because Apple has built up enough of a subscriber-base to not warrant the cost anymore.

Is Apple TV+ Still Worth Signing Up For?

Many new users will have been tempted by Apple's year-long free trial for the subscription service. And it certainly was a good plan to get people to sign up for the new platform at launch. However, Apple TV+ still has a much more limited offering of original content than other streaming services.

Without a year of the service for free, it seems likely that fewer new users will sign up. It's no secret that Apple TV+ has less content to offer than competitor services such as Netflix, and Prime. Without a year-long subscription for free, many new users may see no reason to sign up for Apple's streaming service as well.

Still, Apple's shorter three month free trial still gives users considering Apple TV+ a period to test out the service before parting with any cash. This may be more useful for users already considering Apple TV+.

You'll Have to Part With Cash for Apple TV+ Sooner

With a shorter three month trial of Apple TV+, new subscribers are going to have to part with cash sooner than before. Whenever this deters potential viewers from signing up to the platform remains to be seen, but Apple is still being fairly generous with the trial.
