Is it worth rooting my phone so I can install an Android firewall app like Droidwall?
Haven't seen it suggested yet, but definitely check out Mobiwol firewall
I've been using it for almost a year now. Great app, free, and doesn't require root so your device stays secure. Keeps me within my data limits, no issue.
I'd agree with not rooting just to install and use a firewall. Lookout Mobile incorporates a firewall with antivirus and many more features for free, but their paid option is even better if you want more control, backup options, and ability to perform more actions should you lose your device or it is stolen.
You may "protect" one area by using a firewall, but you are opening your device to much more vulnerabilities, including user error, with rooting. You need good reasons to root, not just supposed firewall protection that can be dealt with in other, safer ways.
you want to root android just to install Droidwall?
That is why I suggested NoRoot Firewal with the playstore link, as it does not require rooting the phone.
I'm with you two on this. Seems pointless to root a phone just for this. If there are other reasons to root, then fine, but just to install a firewall seems a little over the top.
Agree - rooting just opens up other security and privacy concerns that IMO outweigh the value of the firewall protection. And in any case, there are great apps now that don't require root permissions to deliver firewall functionality
I personally use this one https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.netspark.firewall
Came across it after reading this review http://dschwartzberg.wordpress.com/2013/12/16/mobiwol-no-root-firewall-for-android/
Check this forum : http://androidforums.com/android-applications/606580-droidwall-rooting-recommend-firewall.html
Also you may like to checkout NoRoot Firewall at https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=app.greyshirts.firewall . This does not require a rooting of your phone.
