My KMP player does not play the video, but the audio is present. VLC does play the same file. I tried going to video (advanced) and video rendering to various options from VM9 to old video rendering, but still that didn’t solve my problem.

try updating km player or convert the video to popular video formats such as avi or mp4 etc
Without any separate Codec, you are able to play any media files because KMP has its' own internal Codec. Supported Codec are separated by internal & external. For the sound Codec, KMPlayer supports AC3, DTS, MPEG1, 2, AAC, WMA 7, 8, OGG & etc. and it additionally supports matrix function/normalizer function when internal sound Codec is being used.

Yes, as Junil said, maybe you'll have to install some external codecs in order to play the video.
First make sure that you have latest version of KM player (3.4.*) .
Not all video formats are supported by all media players so this will happen with vlc as well with some formats.
the format you are using may not be supported by KMP although based on my experience with KMP i have never faced a format which is not supported by kmp.
If vlc is playing your video why not to use that.
The video codec might not be supported by KMP player
.avi files and .mpv are supported by kmp i suppose
