Hello, I’m wondering why Google Chrome won’t allow me to activate spell checking in the settings.
Chrome has its own built-in spell checking - which I consider more correct when spell checking multiple languages in the same document (I specifically use English and German).
You can enable it in:
Chrome Preferences ? Show advanced settings... ? Privacy ? Use a web service to help resolve spelling errors
This is a bizarre problem.
On the Settings page, did you enable "Use a web service to help resolve spelling errors" under Privacy? Did you accept the terms? Do you have any odd privacy settings or extensions installed?
Because the data is sent to Google's servers, if you've opted out of something on privacy grounds there's a chance that spell checking won't work (but naturally, it would be nice for Chrome to tell you why). I'd say check your privacy settings first for anything that might get in the way, disable extensions and even try uninstalling and reinstalling your browser.
I’ve tried all of those methods, but none of them work in this case.
Well in that case it might be a network issue. I've found a few cases where the IP range of Google's spell check wasn't working due to network software, like a firewall or even the network hardware itself.
There's also a chance that switching to Google's Public DNS might help too?
Worth a try!
I haven't but after reading it, it doesn't really seem to be addressing the same problem I'm experiencing. In Chrome's language settings window, I try to enable English spelling and grammar check, but there are no buttons that allow me to enable that. In the place of the “Enable spell checking” button, there is a message that says “This language cannot be used for spell checking.” It’s hard to believe that Google doesn’t support English spelling and grammar checking. I find that very odd, and I think there has to be something wrong in that case.
Have you followed Googles instructions as laid out here:
