Which apps can enable laptop to function as a WiFi Hotspot? Similar to Connectify, but it has become paid.

To begin with, your laptop will need to be online. It could be connected up by Ethernet cable to a modem or via Wi-Fi. I've tried a couple of software solutions, but the easiest is Virtual Router Manager. Once installed, you can enter a new Network Name (SSID) and password for the hot spot. Select your Wireless Network Connection from the “Shared Connection” menu. Finally, click “Start Virtual Router”. The hotspot’s name should now appear in the network settings of any of your WiFi enabled devices and you should be able to connect using the password you entered.

If you look around the web, you can find an older version of Connectify. This falls in the category of grayware - where using an abandoned free version may or may not be completely legal but the chances of ever getting nailed for it are slim.

Once installed and running, block all attempts by it to update itself.

You can also create an ad-hoc wireless connection on your computer without using any additional software. It takes a bit of patience and learning, but it can be researched AND done in under an hour for someone with no networking experience. Just go to the Microsoft page I linked to above.

do check your firewall antivirus...either allow virtual router or shutdown firewall.

open cmd with administrative rights then type: netsh wlan show drivers and hit enter
If message Hosted network supported : No, then you should try to update the driver and run the command again. Virtual Router requires this flag to be set to Yes.

perhaps you have another WiFi network with the same SSID

go to device manager under network adapters make sure the Virtual Miniport adapter is enabled.

      1. Open Network Sharing and Center.
      2. Click Change adapter settings at the left tab.
      3. Right click Wireless Network Connection 2.
      4. Click disable. Then right click again and click enable.
      5. Open Virtual Router Manager and Start Virtual Router.

      1) Open an Command Prompt under administrative rights
      2) type:
      netsh wlan set hostednetwork mode=allow

      try this microsoft hotfix

I could tether wifi from the s/w to mobile
But recently it automatically tethers non-internet to the device.
And on selecting option of internet name to tether the result error like - HRESULT EFAIL has been returned from a call to a COM component
