What is the difference between a domain and a web hosting service?

What is the difference between a domain and a web hosting service? What is the best web hosting service out there?

If I want to host a website on any given host, can I run WordPress software on it? What do I need?

Every web page has a unique ip address through which we access it. but it is difficult to learn many ip addresses to access web pages so we provide a unique name to it called domain name.
web hosting is name of technique in which we host our domain to the server called domain name server (DNS) which have a memory and access power of our data.
and which receives our request and sed an acknowledgement.

    The internet is a series of pipes....Ok I kid I kid. :-P

I think explaining in reverse should help you understand more.
The internet is basically a network of computer connected to each other.
Its just like a local network of computer, Internet is a wide area network.

So if you wanted to connect to another computer you need the ip address and it needs to be shared. How you connect to other computer on a local area network.

ON the world wide web it would be impossible to remember so many unique ip address. This was solved by domain names.
You register a domain name that points to a computer. IN this case its a server.

Hosting is basically owning a server where you upload files or run a website you want the world to see.

The Domain is what makes it easier for them to locate your "server".

You will already find a link posted by someone else on the best webhosts. I can vouch for hostgator.com(not .in which sucks) as I have been using them for years now.

Another webhost if you have the money i can vouch for is http://www.liquidweb.com

ABout wordpress you can install wordpress on almost any hosting account.

A hosting account that offers Cpanel will have a once click install for wordpress. Its very easy.
If you want it to be easy I suggest you find out if the webhosting control panel does have an option to install wordpress one click.

Otherwise you will have to learn how to upload wordpress and install it manually. WordPress website should give you all the information you need

Just adding to the answers above that domains can be bought in one place and web hosting in another. This is a good practice not to put all eggs in the same basket.

Thanks for your question. It seems that you're a newbee so you need some orientation first. Most website hosts provide both domains and hosting. To make things easy on yourself it would be best to buy both from the same company. The absolute very best WordPress hosting service I know is Linux Hosts Inc. I'm their customer. But before deciding its best to read more about the features they offer. You can get more info at http://usa.weloveourhost.com/

A domain name is the name or address you use to get to your website. For example, makeuseof.com, this is the domain name you use to get to this website.

Web hosting service is the service you buy from a web hosting company. When you buy web hosting service, you will be given a username and password with which you can use to login to a server. You can then upload your website files to the server.

When you or your visitors enter your domain name into a web browser (Firefox, Chrome, IE, etc), you will then be able to see your website - served from the server.

The best web hosting service also depends on your purpose and requirements. Generally speaking, for shared web hosting, the popular ones are HostGator, Bluehost and SiteGround.

You can get really good deals from some third party web hosting websites, such as from 100Webhosting.com. You can sign up with Bluehost through them at only $3.95/month instead of the usual $4.95/month.

SiteGround is good because they have customized hosting for websites running different scripts, such as WordPress, CS-Cart, and Joomla.

If you need managed web hosting for WordPress, you can check out WP-Engine. They are highly secure and fast too!

    Hope that helps.

The difference is that domain means the extension of your site like .com, .net, .org, etc. and Web hosting service means the server where you will put your web file (html files).
In my knowledge the best web hosting service with affordable price and many functions are compared here http://lifehacker.com/5911651/five-best-web-hosting-companies you can choose which one is the best by viewing this article. And yes you can run wordpress by installing some softwares in your server but some of the web hosting services provides wordpress while buying your server only.

A domain is the unique name of your website like http://www.yahoo.com-its unique, no on has this name except yahoo. Your website need to be stored in computer hard disk-keeping your website in a physical location is called hosting. Normally when you buy domain name , you also buy the hosting service from the same company.

It is different, since domain is the one that will become the address of your website and web hosting is a place where you can put all your website stuff in to it, so it is accessible all over the world. There are lots of web hosting service provider out there, such as http://www.godaddy.com and others, but you must concern of what tools will you use. You need to find out, whether their hosting support for wordpress or joomla, mysql, etc. Then you can decide which one is the best and suite for you.

Domain hosting means that the provider will register the domain and handle DNS requests and settings for this domain and possible sub-domains. In some cases it may include E-Mail service for this domain and occasionally even some limited webspace.

Web hosting means that the provider will give you access to a certain amount of disk space (via some protocol e.g. FTP, SSH) on a server that is running a http(s) daemon which is accessible from the internet. Some providers also offer a free domain within the hosting package. Always read the "fine print" as the included domain may only be free for the first 12 months and depending on the provider also the traffic (incoming and outgoing data) may be limited.

For the best web hosting provider I suggest taking a look at the Best of section

Depending on the provider wordpress may be available as a one-click install e.g. via cPanel or similar. The requirements for WP (currently PHP 5.4.2 or newer, MySQL 5.0 or newere) can be found at the following page:
