I was wondering if anyone knows of a good free backup software that supports tape drive backup?
Thank you for your answer. I did not see that you wrote that.
You can buy BackupAssist from Dell Direct. None of these options have free solutions for tape backup on Windows Server.
That is exactly what I have mentioned. These are paid software. :D
Out of all of these options, there isn't one that is free for windows server 2008. You have to pay for tape support for any windows server.
You never mentioned in the question that you are asking the solution for Windows Server 2008, so we presumed it is for personal system as most followers in MakeUseOf are home users. Probably you won't get a freeware for server edition of Windows. In paid software I would suggest you CA Arcserve and Seagate Backup Exec or NetBackup, now owned by Symantec. More Details :
CA Arcserve :
These are the established backup solution and the leading products. Not heard of BackupAssist before.
Thank you for the replies. I will look into these now. I am about to switch over to a new server here at work and BACKUPASSIST charged me $250 for the software and then said for tape support I will need to fork over another $130. Irritated at this point!
Here's another worth looking at:
There are 11 free backup solutions listed in this link alongwith brief review. Take your pick : http://www.techradar.com/news/software/applications/best-free-backup-software-11-programs-we-recommend-1137924

However, I also like Bruce Epper would recommend you EaseUS Todo Backup Free : http://www.todo-backup.com/products/home/free-backup-software.htm
Most drives ship with software that has been optimized for the specific device. Some other options are Amanda, EaseUS Todo Backup and Bacula.
