How can I use my webcam to detect motion and control the computer volume and other items?

Brandon Gee November 18, 2010

I was wondering if the highly knowledgeable staff at MakeUseOf has ever heard of a program that uses a computer’s webcam to detect motion and if no motion is detected for a period of time, the program will turn down the computer’s volume.

My reason for asking is, I usually leave my music on and sometimes leave my desk without returning for a while. I would like my computer to automatically turn down the volume or put itself to sleep when no motion has been detected in a while. Is this possible? Thank you!

the question above is rather old. If you do not receive a fresh answer within this thread, I recommend you to ask a new question.

I recommend YAWCAM. It allows you to run variables with motion detection (and its 100% free!) just find an application or bat file that will lower your volume.

Well there should be some soft that you can control to shut down after sometime or shut it after the end of the mp3. Shutdown Timer

    AMP WinOFF 5.0.1

you can ask them how to do what you want or suggest a feature

    ShutdownTimer shareware Auto Shutdown

Wow, that's a tall (though logical) requirement. Motion detection can be incorporated into standard webcams using motion detection software like -

    This one captures pictures.

    WebCam Monitor (Not Free)
This is again a surveillance device.

Now, there is Zone Trigger (Not Free) which can be setup to do what you are seeking. It is described as the first multi-purpose motion detection software. I can't endorse it as I haven't tried it, but you can check it out.
