How can I troubleshoot why my CD drive is no longer working and fix it?

Eric November 23, 2010

I have an HP D6700 and my disk drive stopped working. I put a CD in and it doesn’t do anything. I go to device manager and look at it and there isn’t a warning or anything next to it. It’s like my computer doesn’t see it or something.

    Hi, Try this

    click the start menu
find the search box (located at directly above the start menu button)
type in "regedit" and press enter
you might get a warning asking if you want to open the "Registry Edit"
    click yes

now you should have the registry edit program open

    double click on "computer"
    double click on "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE"
    double click on "SYSTEM"
    double click on "CurrentControlSet"
    double click on "Control"
    double click on "Class"
double click on "{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} it has to be this EXACT not touch the others.

now you should see a list of items on the right side of the window

and there is an item named "lowerfilter" or "upperfilter"

anyway... right click on it and click delete both.

once deleted, open the "device manager". Start>All Programs>Accessories>Run> type in devmgmt.msc and click "run"

Once you are in the device manager, delete the DVD/CD Rom drives.

after you have deleted the drives, click on the "action" menu located next to the start menu.

click on "scan for hardware changes"

Your computer should automatically re-install your dvd drivers and everything should work. It did for me.

I found some troubleshooting guides for you.

The first is from Microsoft Support and mainly focuses on driver issues. Maybe the disk drive driver was compromised, so try to reinstall it.

Secondly, I found a Diagnostic Flowchart for troubleshooting CD or DVD playback, which is very technical, but covers all possible causes for a drive failure.

Does this happen with any CD, i.e. did you try others? Do you hear any sound from the CD/DVD drive at all?
