use pda net 3.5 and install it on your phone and on your pc it should work fine

U need a small USB wifi adaptor, should cost about Rs 750 from a good brand like belkin

Every Android phone has the USB Tethering option, just connect via your cable and USB Tether to use your Phone's data on PC.

I have a similar problem and do a USB tethering using the free software [Broken Link Removed] . I have been using it without any problem with my desktop.

That is the advantage, just install this app, plug in the device to the computer with the USB cord provided with your phone, enable USB tethering in the app, enable the Mobile data connection in the phone, wait for the computer to sense the connection, and just open the browser and ready to go. No installation or configuration required at the PC end.

Get a USB 802.11n adapter like this to give your xp machine wireless:
