How can I store my data on a webserver? I want to be able to store data online and access it on my computer when needed.

Do you want a file storage service? where you can store and download your files from your backup ?
I will suggest (unlimited uploads for free) and google cloud storage.
You can access and work on the files online on google docs without downloading them.

you can share them with selected users or protect with privacy and password.

I would not recommend setting up your own server and hosting your own files. There is upkeep and certain costs that are involved, of course cost for OSS would be minimal, but personal time is added into that as well. Not to mention the security involved.

If it is for your personal files and you are using Windows, I would recommend Live Mesh. It will allow you to sync several internet connected computers, as well as mobile devices, and also let you remotely connect to those computers.

Hello, what can of webserver are you talking about?  Is it a personal server?  Is it a storage/backup service?, etc.

Just upload the files via FTP. I suggest you pack them with a file archive manager. Your host most likely gave you your FTP details when you registered. I highly recommend that you encrypt all your data before you store it online, especially if it's a shared server.
