How can I get my sound card working in Windows 7?

Tony Jones February 4, 2011

I just loaded Windows 7 and now have lost sound on my computer. I get a message that says ‘High definition audio driver missing’. I have tried to download a driver without success. I have a Creative speaker system connected. Can you advise please.

Go to run and type devmgmt.msc to access your drive manager and look for a yellow sign(if it exist) nera your sound controller, right click on it and uninstal, then reboot and windows should install one. Or if you have the driver located on your desk then install.

Alternatively download Driver Easy and run a scan.

Hello, You can also try speccy. Speccy will tell you all the information about your system. In your case it should be able to tell you what your sound card manufacturer is and the id number of your device. With that information, you can go to the manufacturer and find the right driver for windows 7.

Is this an integrated sound card or a different card? If your system has an onboard card you use the info acquired with speccy. It should tell you what your motherboard is and with that you can get the driver from the motherboard manufacturer.

If it is a different card, do the steps described above on the first paragraph. Hope that helps.

You have to install the driver for your Sound Card.

You can try running Windows Update and see if it automatically finds the correct driver.
Otherwise the easiest method to find out which Sound Card is in your system is to use an utility to show you all installed hardware e.g. PC Wizard (
As soon as you know more about your Soundcard you should be able to find the appropriate driver via Google.
