From which specific sources (other than user outsourcing) do Google maps traffic get information? How reliable is it?
If you are on a smartphone, use waze, other people using waze say`s it there are any cam´s or cop`s or if there is a traffic jam and more! //Kg
Thanks for so many answers
Data is gathered through third-party services and through information from Android users who have opted in to the My Location feature on Google Maps. Google would be able to tell, for instance, if there were several Android owners moving slowly on the freeway and determine that there was traffic slowing them down. The more people opting into the service in the area, the better the traffic information available will be.
I also read that information is gathered from Government souce? Can you please specify which Government source?
Most probably traffic cams
But i do not think that is the case in India.
Its 100% based on data collected from android phones.(according to a newspaper article i read)
Therefore its not very accurate.
i do trust google maps its the best
I don't disagree , I have another question -
Is google maps places informaiton from infoindia directory?
As with the mapping, Google will probably be using multiple sources - different sources for different countries and maybe multiple sources within any country too. So reliability will be variable. You'll get a better answer from users in your own country who have used the service.
I only used Google as a sat nav very briefly as I found that the UK mapping was distinctly inferior to that on a dedicated satnav (TomTom) I expect the same will apply to the traffic data.
Given the resources Google pour into their mapping division (I've seen estimates of 6000 staff, but that includes all their mapping services) expect things to improve.
