CCleaner is good for lots of things, but for registry cleaning Eusing free registry cleaner is the best. It finds lots that CCleaner misses. Auslogics is the best free defragger.

Ccleaner has become popular because it mentioned a lot on the internet, but that does not mean it's the best. By itself, none is foolproof. All lack a distinct profile. Want a better than ccleaner popular? scores! ..... nCleaner! Find it on the internet!

Why pull down Ccleaner! people have used and think it is good  .I have used it and I think it saves me time and" does what it says on the tin"

That can't be said about a lot of others that have been mentioned ,I would never recommend a product that I had not personally used for at least 12-24 months and never ever had one little bit of trouble .

I have no vested interest in Ccleaner .

As for cleaners I always suggest CCleaner and Wise Registry Cleaner

    http://www.wisecleaner.com/wiseregistrycleanerfree.html

Another decent but more advanced option is RegSeeker. You should not blindfolded delete everything it suggests.

As for defragmentation the only thing I can safely suggest is PageDefrag
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb897426

Registry compacting should also be treated as a one time use after a big registry cleanup not a regular maintenance. Compacting your registry regularly will actually slow down your System and increase registry fragmentation.

Ok, DO NOT use RegCompact.NET on Windows 7 Ultimate x64 or ANY Windows 7 for that matter.

It will break your Windows and result in a Bluescreen on start. Maybe someone can remove the link from my post.

        Done.

I will leave your reply up as a warning for anyone who may otherwise come across this tool.

Regarding RegCompact.NET the author said  it works on Windows XP 32-bit and XP 64-bit, but I can't guarantee it's use for later versions such as Windows Vista or Windows 7.

Imo, Defraggler by Piriform is the best.

'CCleaner' - cleaning registry, unused files and internet tracks
'Defraggler' - a good defragging tool
Both are freeware and can be downloaded from http://www.filehippo.com/
