Can you recommend a free virus protection program?

miaoming February 6, 2010

Is there any noteworthy virus protection programs available online for free? My McAfee subscription will soon be running out and I need to either renew or better yet get something for free. I’m a novice and so really need help from the ground floor on up. Thanks.

Highly suggest AVG free, one of the lightest anti-viruses in the market and does a very good job. It does take tons of resources when updating or scanning though, but that's common. McAfee is a pest...

I am using NOD 32, by ESET, and it is doing a superb job. I have use AVG (kept CPU constantly running high) had to remove it. Had NORTON (slowed down computer and had problems with installed software) had a hard time deleting this program. With Mircosoft security essential (and perform all the tests, e.g. performance, speed, etc,) and NOD 32 it catches just about everything (make sure that you preform a malicious tool removal check up every so often). This will keep everything running just fine.

I have tried a lot of them out but I always keep coming back to AVG Free. The others were not ones that I got comfortable with and I think you need to be comfortable with your anti-virus program. AVG has never given me any real problems in the past and I would recommend it to everyone.

    Hello miaoming,

yes, there are several very good free antivirus programs available online.
I use Avira AntiVir Personal, others will recommend AVG antivirus.

Your question was also essentially answered in the following thread:

Once you have decided for a free program (more about that below) you should first download the new program, disconnect your internet connection, remove McAffee, then install the new program before you reconnect to the internet. This will reduce the risk of catching a virus while you're without antivirus protection.

You must uninstall McAffee before you install a new antivirus program. Never try to run two antivirus programs at the same time, it could lock up your computer! You can go to > System Control > Software and uninstall the program there or use a free uninstaller like Revo Uninstaller.

      Hi TinaMUO

Thanks a bunch. The links were also very enlightening I'll be making good use of the information you've passed on. One more Q why did you choose Avira over AVG?

        There is no objective reason.
        It's a German company.

Microsoft Security Essentials is a very good antivirus+antispyware software developed by Microsoft. It's a free software for Windows Users. You may find the product here:
