Can you recommend an easy to use, yet advanced photo editing program?

Hi, I am trying to edit some old photographs of my grandparents i.e take the background out, sharpen the faces, put photos into new backgrounds etc.
I have been using Gimp, but am not really getting very far. I can get Adobe Photoshop CS4 Micro Edition for only a few ££££.
My question is: Would this software do the things I want to do? Or is there free software out there that can do these thing easily enough? Only thing is, it must be simple to use.
Many thanks in advance for your kind reply’s.

Download Picassa3. It has great editing software and will make pics black/white, tone, etc. You can make videos, movies, and add music to upload to utube. I use it more than my Photoshop.

If you are running XP, Dogwaffle from is really fun and has a lot of features for freeware. There are quite a few freeware programs on nonags and they are all safe and tested.

    Hi Mrs B,

Why can't you get very far with GIMP? For the things you want to do, I'd say that would be the best bang for your buck.

It's not that hard to learn: //
