I am using Compaq Presario V3000 series notebook with 2GB DDR2 RAM. I plan to upgrade the memory. How do I know if the motherboard supports DDR3 RAM?

it does not. a motherboard only supports one kind of ram. so you only get ddr2
most ddr2 computers support up to 4 gb.

Hello, it is not possible for you to upgrade the memory on that laptop. Your laptop already has the maximum memory allowed of 2 GBs. You can not use DDR3 on said aptop. It can only use DDR2 PC2-5300 sticks. Your laptop has two slots with a maximum of 1GB stick for slot.

If your notebook is currently using DDR2 it won't support DDR3. They are both technically and physically different.
There was only a handful of desktop motherboards supporting both but neither at the same time nor in all slots. They had 2 slots dedicated to DDR2 and another 2 for DDR3.
