Is it possible to spoof the number of a mobile phone?

My friend claims that somebody else used his mobile phone number to make calls. The made calls were registered in his mobile, which he claims was off at that time. Is such a thing possible — if so how?

Yes of course, there are all kinds of websites out there that will call a phone number and fake caller ID by displaying a different number.

Here's the catch though (and I apologize to your friend if he's trying to pull over a fast one on you), but this has nothing to do with the cellular network or the phone itself. It's just someone typing in his number into an online form.

Which means, if he's telling the truth, there won't be any record of the phone call in his cellular phone account. Easiest way for him to prove he didn't make the call is to show that the number doesn't show up in his cellular phone account log for calls made. If it was spoofed, it won't be there.
