Why are my mouse-over folder descriptions so short?

Goran October 11, 2011

I have set up folder descriptions to show on mouse-over for some folders. I did that by creating a desktop.ini file and setting up the folders as read only. But the description that appears when I hover my cursor is too short. Is it possible to make the whole description show on mouse-over and not just part of it?

I am using Windows XP.

I think what we need here is a tool tip displayed with long string and not for longer time...as I saw you people trying to tweak the time.

Does the customized tooltip is displayed or not ?
May be,an option to change the length is not available.
you will see dots like ...

have a look at the guide for xp :http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/cc144102%28v=vs.85%29.aspx

did you mark the folder as system folder ?http://philipflint.com/2011/09/23/changing-the-icon-used-for-folders/

•Create a new Notepad *.txt file and type in the following:
    InfoTip=Type your detailed description
•Save the file as Desktop.ini and copy it into the folder you want to describe
•Go to File > Save and close Notepad
    •Click Start > Run, type in the command line, ATTRIB +S “folder name” (e.g. ATTRIB +S ” C:Documents and Settings[your userid]My Documents”)
•Ok done, you will see the folder description pop-up when mouse over.

Note: If don’t see a pop-up when mouse over a folder, you need to perform some extra step as below.
    •Go to Tools.
•Under Folder Options and then select the View tab.
•In the Advanced Settings list, select the check boxes for Display File Size Information In Folder Tips and Show Pop-Up Description For Folder And Desktop Items.
    •Click OK.

I opened HKEY_CURRENT_USERControl PanelMouse  but there is no option for "MouseHoverTime".

I have another question. Is it possible to edit some registry that will increase the size of the tooltip (height, widht)? May be then it will show the whole description.

    go to registry:
add new properties to infotip and quicktip.

As far as I know tool-tip or ballon tip options are hard-coded into applications or in this case the Windows Explorer.

The only option I can offer is decreasing the hover time allowing you to show it again faster within the registry (Start > Run > "regedit")

    HKEY_CURRENT_USERControl PanelMouse

There should be an entry called "MouseHoverTime" - it's the time in milliseconds until the tool-tip appears. If you lower it you should be able to get a second look faster.

Not exactly what you are looking for but at least some workaround
